Circularity

CO2 capture and utilisation

One of the main distrurbances to the equilibrium of biosphere cycles is carbon dioxide emission from various sources, particularly fossil-fuel operations.  We have been working for around 15 years on developing innovative solutions for CO2 capture or utilisation through various value-added pathways.

Life-cycle analysis (EVs, eFuels, etc.)

We work on life cycle analysis of existing and new products to assess their environmental footprint, degree of circularity as well as techno-economic feasibility under various alternatives, design specifications, and market and policy conditions.

Renewable energy technology recycling

Renewable energies bring along a diversity of benefits. However, with every opportunities come challenges. We are shifting from traditional resource-intensive energy systems to material-intensive ones, given the weight/kW of renewable technologies such as wind and solar. With the concept of circular economy we are working on the forecast of future renewable energy technology waste and the development of reverse logistic systems.

Biogas and biorefinery

Biogas is a product of nature's waste recycling process. It is growingly becoming an important sustainable energy vector with diverse input sources (e.g. landfills and anaerobic digestion of waste materials, wastewater treatment sludge, manure from animal production, or energy crops) and diverse applications.  We work on process selection, design, optimisation, and market integration of biogas systems for small and large-scale applications.

Food waste minimisation with IoT technologies and predictive analytics

According to the UN, each year, an estimated 1/3 of all food produced – equivalent to 1.3 billion tons worth around $1 trillion – ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and retailers, or spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices. We work on addressing UN SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production) through the development of green information system technologies for improving fresh food supply chain efficiency. For doing this, we collaborate with local food markets.
