Australia’s electricity sector is undergoing one of the most rapid and profound energy transitions globally, driven by unprecedented levels of renewable energy integration, particularly distributed rooftop solar generation. As the National Electricity Market (NEM) evolves, historical trends can quickly become obsolete, making robust data exploration and interpretation increasingly critical for informed investment, operational, and policy decisions.
Recognising this challenge, we initiated a long-term project to develop a freely accessible visual analytics platform that enables intuitive exploration of historical NEM data. NEMDive is the culmination of this effort, bringing together 25 years (1999-2024) of electricity demand and wholesale electricity price data from across Australia’s National Electricity Market into a single interactive visual analytics environment.
NEMDive integrates spatial and temporal visualisations to support the exploration of long-term electricity demand patterns, market dynamics, and regional variations across Australian states. The platform enables users to navigate complex datasets through intuitive maps, charts, and interactive dashboards, transforming large volumes of market data into accessible and actionable insights.
The dashboard reveals key developments that have shaped Australia’s electricity system over the past quarter century, including the emergence of the well-known "duck curve" associated with increasing rooftop solar penetration, evolving demand patterns, regional market differences, and significant disruptions linked to major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. By enabling users to investigate trends across multiple temporal and geographical scales, NEMDive supports a deeper understanding of the forces driving Australia's ongoing energy transition.
NEMDive has been developed for researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, educators, students, and the broader community. Whether the goal is academic research, policy analysis, market assessment, or public engagement, the platform provides a powerful and accessible tool for exploring one of the world's most dynamic electricity markets.
Explore the dashboard developed by the NEX.TLab and the University of Technology Sydney's (UTS) Visualisation Institute, and discover how Australia's electricity market has changed over the past quarter century.
